How is D-limonene made?
D-Limonene is primarily produced by cold pressing citrus fruits, where the essential oil is extracted from the peel. This crude oil contains high levels of D-Limonene, which is then isolated and purified via distillation. Alternatively, it can be obtained synthetically, although the natural variant is preferred in applications where provenance and sustainability are important.
The function of D-limonene
D-Limonene is known for its excellent solubility for fats, oils and resins, making it a valuable raw material in degreasers and industrial cleaners.
