What is 12-hydroxystearic acid?

12-hydroxystearic acid, often abbreviated as 12-HSA, is a fatty acid with unique properties. This acid is extracted from castor oil, which comes from the seeds of the ricinus communis tree. It is a derivative of ricinoleic acid and is characterized by a hydroxyl group at the 12th position of the molecular chain. Due to this chemical structure, 12-HSA has properties that make it very useful in various industrial applications. Due to its consistency and versatility, 12-hydroxystearic acid is often used as a thickener and stabilizer.

How is 12-hydroxystearic acid made?

The production of 12-hydroxystearic acid starts with castor oil. This oil contains approximately 85% ricinoleic acid, which is converted into 12-HSA via chemical processes. The process starts with hydrogenation, in which the double bonds in the castor oil are saturated with hydrogen. This results in a stable structure. The mixture is then subjected to a fractionation process, in which 12-HSA is separated from other components. After purification, a pure form of 12-hydroxystearic acid is obtained, ready for industrial applications. This production process guarantees a consistent product with high quality.

The function of 12-hydroxystearic acid

12-Hydroxystearic acid has unique chemical properties that make it valuable in many applications. Due to the presence of the hydroxyl group, the acid has a high melting point and excellent thickening capacity. It can be mixed well with other substances and provides a stable structure, even at higher temperatures. As a result, 12-HSA is often used in formulations where stability is essential, such as in greases, coatings and lubricants. In addition, it has good adhesion properties and provides protection against moisture, which can extend the shelf life of products.

12-Hydroxystearic acid in various industries

12-hydroxystearic acid is mainly used in the technical industry. One of the largest sales markets is the production of lithium greases, which are often used in the automotive sector where heavy machinery is used. These greases provide long-lasting lubrication and are resistant to high temperatures. In the technical industry, 12-HSA is used in lubricants for bearings, engines and hydraulic systems, for example, where durability and heat resistance are of great importance. Furthermore, 12-hydroxystearic acid is also used in the production of coatings, plastics, inks and pharmaceutical products.
